A Lesson in Power, Responsibility and Humanity

It’s a moment rarely seen, often misunderstood, but deeply symbolic.

When a judge breaks their pen after delivering a death sentence, it may seem like drama in a theatre. But this act holds profound significance, one that speaks to the weight of justice, the burden of authority and the human heart behind the robe. Imagine sitting on a bench, knowing that your signature will determine whether someone lives or dies. That pen which is a simple tool becomes the vessel for the most irreversible decision in law.

After signing a death sentence, a judge traditionally breaks the nib of the pen used to deliver that verdict. It is not just ceremony; it is symbolism in motion, “this pen will never carry another death." It is a powerful reminder that even in justice, there is grief. Even when law is followed, humanity remains. This tradition is not about guilt, it is about acknowledging the gravity of that act.

The broken pen speaks two things:

1. Justice according to the law, evidence, and due process.

2. A burden of making a decision no one takes lightly.

In an era where leadership and authority are often equated with strength and decisiveness, this simple gesture teaches a deeper truth. True authority is never drunk on power, it is humbled by its consequences. It is a powerful reminder that even in justice, there is grief.

Sometimes, the right decision doesn’t feel like a triumph. It feels like a scar. But it’s a necessary one. In the world of law, leadership, or life, we must remember this: “Every decision has weight.” As professionals, creators, managers, or leaders, we hold "pens" of our own, our actions, approvals, and judgments.

✍️ Power is not about command. It’s about conscience.

💡 Justice is not only in the verdict. It’s also in the humility of the one who gives it.
